North Carolina's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)
Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) was founded in 1892 and is also part of the UNC System. This school brought the topic of cuisine to the forefront of the conversation as yet another important aspect to life on an HBCU campus and African American culture. WSSU offers 40 majors and minors, with nursing, education, and business administration among the most popular. It is also one of a select few universities that offers a motor sports management program. Next up was Saint Augustine’s University (SAU), established in 1867.
The top-ranked HBCU schools are not only leading academic institutions but also offer an exceptional student experience. This year's rankings have introduced an Economic Mobility Index, which measures the economic status change for low-income students. ACT/SAT scores have been removed from rankings to reflect a general de-emphasis on test scores in the college admissions process. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were established before 1964 to serve Black students who were denied traditional educational opportunities. Today, there are 107 HBCUs across the country that offer degree programs to students of all backgrounds, with advantages like strong student support systems and career advising. Established in 1910, NCCU is a liberal arts HBCU in Durham.
In addition to undergraduate degrees in psychology, recreation management, and mass communications, Shaw students can also earn master’s degrees in Christian education, divinity, or early childhood education. The Glass House or Johnson house, built in 1949 in New Canaan, Connecticut built atop a dramatic hill on a rolling 47-acre estate was designed by Philip Johnson as his own residence and is considered a masterpiece in the use of glass. It is now operated as a historic house museum by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. An early proponent of modern architecture who later went in various design directions, from postmodernism to later explorations of non-Euclidean geometry, Johnson was not easy to pigeonhole stylistically. What is undeniable is that Johnson would go on to build substantial projects worldwide and also became one of the central powerbrokers of architecture in America for much of the 20th Century.
In 1975, Johnson received the Twenty-five Year Award of the American Institute of Architects for his Glass House. In 1986, Johnson donated the 49-acre property to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which offers guided tours of the house. The 49-acre campus is an example of the successful preservation and interpretation of modern architecture, landscape, and art. The Glass House, built between 1949 and 1995 by famed architect Philip Johnson in New Canaan, Connecticut, is one of the nation’s greatest modern architectural landmarks.

The installation aims to explore the unexpected opportunities offered by disparate building materials, such as glass, brick, and paper. Our most concise tour, focusing on The Glass House and its promontory, with a minimum of walking. Night, (1947) by sculptor Alberto Giacometti, was one of a handful of artworks that Philip Johnson displayed in the Glass House while he lived there. The plaster sculpture was granted a place of honor atop the central glass coffee table that Mies van der Rohe designed for Johnson. In the 1960s, Night began to shed its outer layer and was eventually sent to the artist’s studio for repair. Giacometti died before the work was conserved, and the sculpture was never returned.

The most basic way to experience Johnson's signature work is the one-hour tour of the Glass House and the promontory it sits on. This involves a minimal amount of walking and costs $25 on Mondays and Fridays, and $30 on Saturdays. You'll see the house itself, plus the whirling swimming pool, and the spectacular view out the back windows of the pavilion in the pond below. But perhaps Johnson's most famous creation was his modestly-sized, 56' x 32' rectangle of a home in New Canaan, Connecticut, called Glass House.
The focal point of the Glass House is the living room, with a rug defining the space and seating around a low table anchoring it. The placement of furniture is precise and contrasts with the ever-changing landscape outside. The bedroom, separated from the living room by built-in storage cabinets with walnut veneer, is the most private room in the house and contains a small desk. Philip Johnson sits in a corner of the Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut, in 1998. The multiple reflections on the transparent glazed expanses seem to conceal as much as they reveal.

The house is around 2,000 square feet and, aside from steel around its edges, has floor-to-ceiling glass around its entire exterior. Visitors standing in front of the property can see sunlight blazing through the rear walls of the home, seamlessly connecting the house with nature. Johnson famously quipped that he had the most beautiful and expensive wallpaper the world had ever known.
This was his library as well, with some 1,400 volumes, only one of which isn't about art or architecture, but a work of fiction. The floor is also made of red brick laid out in a herringbone pattern and is raised ten inches off of ground level. The only other divisions in the house besides the bathroom are discreetly done with low cabinets and bookshelves, making the house a single open room. This provides ventilation from all four sides flowing through the house as well as ample lighting.
He was greatly committed to the inevitability of change, not only in architecture but in all things. He infused this mentality within his architecture, restlessly embracing new ideas as developed by those around him. His record of accomplishments is both uneven and prodigious but the highlights alone are quite significant.

Born in 1881, he was heir to a fortune accumulated by his father, Hugh T. Inman, and grandfather, Shadrach W. Inman. At the time of his death in 1910, Hugh Inman was believed to have been the wealthiest man in Georgia. In addition to cotton brokerage and futures, the family had interests in manufacturing, wholesale dry goods, insurance, real estate, railroads and streetcars, and banking – strategically, nearly all were related to the cotton industry. In the small vestibule between the Stair Hall and Library, Shutze tucked a telephone closet painted a brilliant yellow.
The garage and servant’s quarters were renovated by James C. Wise in 1967 for use as a luncheon/tea room and gift shop known as the Coach House Restaurant, which was leased to the Forward Arts Foundation. South of Swan House, a formal boxwood garden, was restored by landscape architect Spencer Tunnell between 1996 and 1998. From 1998 to 2003 the Swan House underwent a major restoration by the architectural firm Lord Aeck Sargent. The Swan Coach House was originally designed for the Edward H. Inman family in 1928 by world-renowned architect, Phillip Trammel Shutze. It served as the carriage house and servants' quarters for the famous Swan House Mansion until 1966 when the Atlanta History Center purchased the property from the Inman family estate.

Mrs. Inman didn’t allow her grandchildren to use the main stairs – she didn’t want them to scuff the wood steps. In partnership with Fulton County and UGA’s Cooperative Extension, Atlanta History Center established a 4-H and UGA Extension office for the Buckhead community. Located in McElreath Hall, the office provides assistance in agriculture and environmental science, family and consumer science, and youth development to everyone in the local area.
All proceeds benefit the Atlanta visual arts community through Forward Arts Foundation. Other attractions on the grounds of the center include five gardens—the Quarry Garden, Tullie Smith Farm Gardens, Swan House Garden and Landscape, Cherry Sims Asian American Garden, and Frank A. Following the conclusion of his career as a player, he joined the Atlanta Braves front office as an executive vice president and became a spokesman for minority hiring in baseball. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982 and awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2002. Mr. Aaron was further promoted to the major league Milwaukee Braves in 1954 at the age of 20, after his teammate sustained a spring training injury and freed up a spot on the roster. He won his first batting title in 1956 and was awarded the National League MVP following a remarkable 1957 season.

The pattern of the black & white marble tiles obscures the heat registers in the floors – Shutze cleverly blended Classical architecture with 20th-century convenience. The garden’s design and planting scheme reflects European influences on the Southeastern landscape and includes the entire garden façade of the Museum Building. Italian classicism, especially that of the late Renaissance period during the 16th century, is marked by complex and sophisticated design which is not necessarily unified. One important principle is variety of form, which Shutze accomplished by combining such an assortment of styles.

I’m hoping they have the sense to bring in at least one real voice actor, or at least avoid going for yet another big name. White’s classic novel appears to already have more than it’s fair share of star power. When the other animals reveal to Wilbur that he will be prepared for dinner by Christmas, Charlotte promises to hatch a plan guaranteed to save Wilbur's life. With the help of Templeton, Charlotte convinces the Zuckerman family that Wilbur is actually quite special by spelling out descriptions of him in her web such as "Some pig", "Terrific", "Radiant" and "Humble" in the opening to the barn for the Zuckermans to see. These descriptions are even posted in newspapers that the whole town read and came out to see.
Horrified at this depressing discovery, Wilbur reduces himself to tears until a mysterious voice tells him to "chin up", and waits until morning to reveal herself to him. The following morning, she reveals herself to be a spider named Charlotte A. Cavatica, living on a web on a corner of Homer's barn overlooking Wilbur's pig pen. She tells him that she will come up with a plan guaranteed to spare his life. Well, “Charlotte’s Web” is being adapted into a film, this time live action. It’s been in movie form before, back in 1973 Hanna-Barbera put together a pretty strong animated version with Debbie Gibson as Charlotte the spider and none other than Paul Lynde as Templeton the rat. This new version looks to follow more in the mold of Babe and more recently Racing Stripes by delivering live animals that can talk.
While there, Charlotte produces an egg sac containing her unborn offspring while Wilbur, despite not winning the blue ribbon, is later given a bronze medal and celebrated by the fair's staff and visitors, making him too prestigious to justify killing him. Exhausted from laying eggs, Charlotte cannot return home because she is dying. Wilbur sadly bids farewell to her as she remains at the fair and dies shortly after his departure, but he manages to take her egg sac home with the help of Templeton.
The publicity eventually dies down, and, after a hornet lands in Charlotte's web and ruins the SOME PIG message, Charlotte requests the barn animals to devise a new word to spin within her web. After several suggestions, the goose suggests the phrase, TERRIFIC! The incident becomes another media sensation, though Homer still desires to slaughter Wilbur. For the next message, Charlotte then employs Templeton to pull a word from a magazine clipping at the dump for inspiration, in which he returns the word RADIANT ripped from a soap box to spin within her web.
When Wilbur has matured, Fern is regretfully forced to take him to her uncle Homer Zuckerman's barnyard. Mrs. Arable feels slightly concerned for Fern's behavior and one night, prevails upon Fern to stay home, do her homework and go straight to bed without visiting Wilbur. Live-action footage and computer-generated imagery are seamlessly woven together in this charming adaptation of E.B.
